Coach my roll

Get coached on your own 50 50 guard

Reading about 50 50 guard only gets you so far. Upload a roll or a competition match and the professor watches it back with you — it finds every 50 50 guard exchange, marks the moment it went wrong, and tells you what to drill next.

The chapter

50/50 is the position with the most honest name in jiu jitsu: the same leg entanglement, mirrored. Whatever you can reach on them, they can reach on you, so nobody starts ahead — the position hands both players an identical set of locks and waits to see who uses them better.

In no-gi the whole position compresses into one question: whose heel is exposed. Every attack and every defense here is downstream of that, for both players at once.

It's also not just a submission trade. Coming up on top and hunting the back are how the position gets scored, and treating it purely as a leg-lock lottery is how you end up parked in it for whole rounds.

In 50/50

Both of you hold the same position, so the exchange is decided by details: whose heel stays hidden, who controls the thigh instead of the shin, and who remembers there's a second leg and a top position on the table.

  1. Break their feet apart to clear a path, isolate the heel with your forearm, and turn the heel up while your knees squeeze and your body rotates — the legs finish it, the arm just holds.

WhenThe moment their heel shows — it peels off the mat, or you split their crossed feet and it's suddenly reachable. This is the position's primary threat, in both directions.

  2. Feed their foot into your armpit and attack the ankle straight on — same grips, no heel exposure needed, and legal in rulesets where the heel hook isn't.

WhenThey tuck the heel away, or you're competing under gi rules — the foot break stays available when the heel doesn't.

  3. 3Fake the front leg, hit the back leg

When their grips commit to defending the leg you're entangled on, scissor your legs and transfer the attack to their free leg — the second entanglement arrives before their hands do.

WhenThey're biting hard on your front-leg attack. Their defense is the tell: sell the front, switch to the back.

  4. Posture up and hip in to come up on top for points and passing angles; and if their leg drifts across your body, their back starts facing you — chase it.

WhenThe lock exchange stalls, or their leg crosses your centerline. Position beats another minute of hand fighting over the same heel.

Also worth knowing

  • Stand up to get outWhenYou're on the defending end and their lock isn't set — unlock your legs, both feet planted, both hands off the mat, and stand.
  • Invert under when they standWhenThey build up to stand out of your 50/50 — follow underneath before the leg pulls free.
  • Knee bar off the pummelWhenThey guard the heel but leave the knee line — pummel in, throw the leg over, and attack the knee instead.

Why you keep failing here

  • Every 50/50 exchange ends with them on my heel instead of the other way around.

WhyYou attack with your own heel floating. In a mirrored position an exposed heel is an invitation no matter whose it is, and they're watching yours as closely as you're watching theirs.

FixKeep your heel protected the entire time you attack, and make catching their exposed heel a reflex rather than a plan.

  • They slip their knee free and escape before anything lands.

WhyYou're only holding their shin. With the thigh free, sliding the knee out is a high-percentage escape and they all know it.

FixControl above their knee — trap the thigh, not just the shin, so the leg can't shorten its way out of your lock.

  • I get the heel-hook grip but the tap never comes.

WhyYou're cranking against the direction their knee points, so the whole leg rotates with your force instead of the joint absorbing it.

FixFollow the knee — whichever direction it points is the direction your breaking power has to flow through.
