The chapter

K guard is the leg locker's on-ramp: feet on the outside, knee wedged inside behind their knee, an underhook on their leg. From flat on your back it turns a kneeling or standing opponent into a menu of entries — to backside 50/50, to the back, to the legs.

What you hunt from it depends on the ruleset. The position is the same either way — the underhook and the inside knee — but the finish line moves: legs in no-gi, the back in the gi.

It's worth learning even if you never leg lock, because it isn't an island — it's literally half of another guard, and the same underhook converts to single leg X, X guard, and back to closed guard without giving anything up.

Playing bottom

Everything runs through the underhook and the inside knee: move them until their knee comes off the mat and onto your chest, and the chop, the back take, and the armbar start picking themselves.

  1. 1Underhook the leg, knee off the mat

Knee inside between their knees, foot on their hip, and an underhook behind their knee like a hook. The position starts working when you move them enough to peel their knee off the floor and connect their leg to your chest.

WhenThe moment you land in k-guard, before attacking anything — win the underhook and float the knee, because every attack below assumes it.

  2. Swing your outside leg over the top and chop behind their knee, dropping over their leg as it folds — you land in backside 50/50 with the whole leg-attack menu open.

WhenTheir knee floats off the ground. You've extended them with the underhook and the foot on the hip; the floating knee is the window to swing through.

  3. Instead of attacking the leg, pass their leg across your body, switch your hips, and feed yourself under their legs until you come up behind them with a hook.

WhenIn the gi especially, and any time their weight drives forward over your guard — go under and behind instead of fighting the pressure head-on.

  4. When they collapse the distance and wrap you up, the arm they commit is trapped over your k-guard. Switch your grip to the elbow, push the head down, and bring your legs over for the shotgun-style armbar.

WhenThey close distance and hug tight, or burn a hand reaching down to strip your leg — the arm they spend is the one you capture.

Also worth knowing

  • Spin under their knee cutWhenThey start a knee-slide pass — the pass is the entry: their knee shoots across, your knee shoots in.
  • Switch to single leg XWhenThey base out wide and heavy against the chop — widen them further, pull the knee, and trade entanglements.
  • Calf slicerWhenTheir leg folds as you pull them into your lap — the slicer and the baby bolo ride the same entry.
  • Recycle to closed guardWhenThey kill the entry and settle their base — close the guard and restart rather than concede the scramble.

Why you keep failing here

  • They stack their weight down on my inside knee and everything stops.

WhyYou're catching their whole bodyweight on one knee and trying to out-push it with that same knee.

FixStop holding the weight and steer it — use both legs to shift them sideways until the pressure comes off and the knee floats again.

  • They drive in chest to chest and my k-guard just folds.

WhyNo frame underneath them — your shoulders stay in reach, so their chest pressure closes every angle before you can attack.

FixFrame under them, push with the frame and the inside knee together, and walk your shoulders away until there's room to lift your hips.

  • The moment they backstep, I lose the whole position.

WhyYou're treating the backstep as the end of the exchange and letting the leg go instead of following the turn.

FixKeep the underhook and follow them to 70/30 — the backstep that escapes your k-guard is the same motion that feeds the saddle.
